Alitalia approves sale of Air France-KLM

The board of directors of Italian airline Alitalia supports a nominee of competitor Air France-KLM as the buyer of a state block of shares. Such decision has been accepted during special assembly of Alitalia’s members of board.
Air France-KLM considers, that this transaction will allow to reach significant synergetic effect and plans to invest nearby 6,5 billion euro into the development of the company. Besides, Air France-KLM plans to keep brand Alitalia and internal transportations.
Alitalia marks that Air France-KLM’s plans on reduction of number of workplaces are corresponding to plans of the company.
Meanwhile the government of Italy, which possesses 49,9 % of actions Alitalia, will accept the final decision on destiny of the company. Earlier the government expected to be defined with buyer Alitalia till the middle of January 2008.
The Italian internal carrier Air One, supported by trade unions and some politicians, also applies for purchase of a state block of shares of unprofitable airline Alitalia.
In the end of July 2007, Alitalia’s pure debt made 1,05 billion euro, and daily losses of the company exceed 1 million euro. In order to improve the situation the government of Italy repeatedly undertook attempts to privatize the unprofitable enterprise and even declared about the auction.
