Italy risks “freeze in darkness” in the winter
Italy risks “freeze in darkness” owing to mass switching-off of the electric power in the forthcoming winter. As agency Reuters informs, such unfavorable forecast has been made by the chapter of the largest Italian power company Enel.
As it has been said, Italy is threatened with greater shortage of the electric power if the country (which is on 85 % depends on imported gas) will not develop own power infrastructure in the nearest future.
It is worth of mentioning that during approximately two last years Italy often collides with faults of gas deliveries because of constantly growing demand. Nevertheless, gas mains, on which the country so much depends, remain in the same state as earlier.
Let’s add, that besides the development of own infrastructure, Italians try to solve arising problems by agreements with Russia. So, in June, 2007, Eni and Gazprom have signed the contract on construction of a new gas main which has received the name the South-European gas main.
Algeria and Russia are the basic suppliers of gas to Italy. Thus, Italy is the second-largest importer of the Russian gas in the Europe.
