The government of Italy: Alitalia may be liquidated
19 July 2007Liquidation may become the only prospect for unprofitable Italian air carrier Alitalia SpA in case of if the company will not be sold. Such application has made by Italy’s Economics Minister Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa.
However, the representative of the government has emphasized, that the Italian authorities continue to consider various variants of selling Alitalia’s shares.
On the eve the government of Italy has declared formal end of auction on sale of Alitalia as last participant who has remained in the tender - American investment company MatlinPatterson - has refused from the further participation.
Before this the Italian government has declared intention to renew negotiations about sale of a share in an air carrier to the companies which have left the tender. At the same time minister of transport of Italy has noted, that does not see the necessity for carrying out of one more auction.
The Italian government has exposed unprofitable state-owned airline Alitalia on sale in the end of 2006. Some companies have declared about their readiness to be overcome for shares of the main Italian air carrier.
