Garnier has been fined for racism
8 July 2007French company Garnier, world known cosmetics manufacturer, and Swiss agency on stuff selection Adecco are fined on 30 thousand euro (about 40 thousand dollars). The court has recognized them guilty as in 2000 these companies carried out “racist recruiting campaign”.
The penalty - is not the first punishment for Garnier and Adecco. These companies are also to pay 10 thousand euro of a legal cost to the claimant - SOS Racisme group.
The judge has agreed with reasons of the charge, which approved, that the company on search and hiring of the personnel received “the ciphered instructions” from Garnier to search for the items of sales in Paris only for young white women. Service record from Garnier, demanding to employ women “BBR”, that is an abbreviation of colors of the French flag - “bleu-blanc-rouge” (”dark blue-white-red”) has been presented to the court. According to the public prosecutor, this term hides “a racist code” for excluding women of the African, Arabian and Asian origin.
Charging party, also, marks that ostensibly the same abbreviation was used in the literature of a far right party “National front”.
Managers of Garnier approve, that their actions had no attributes of racism, and are measured to continue judicial suit. Representatives of Adecco have declared, that they “are amazed” by the decision of court and are also measured to submit the appeal.
Let’s note that up to this case large corporations in France have never been recognized guilty of discrimination to a racial attribute.
