The project of the largest British submarine
10 May 2007The Great Britain has shown the project of a new nuclear submarine. HMS (”her majesty ship”, a traditional designation of the British military fleet ships) Astute becomes the largest and powerful submarine in the British Naval Forces. It is capable to round globe, never having emerged, and its engine is calculated on 25 years of work. The length of a submarine will make 97 m.
The submarine will be constructed by company BAE Systems Inc. and will be acted in operation in January 2009. After that the Great Britain plans to create two more nuclear submarines of the same class. The total cost of all three submarines will make nearby 3,6 billion dollars.
In parallel construction of new submarines the Great Britain realizes the project of nuclear reequipment of four Vanguard class nuclear submarines. Each of them will have 16 nuclear rockets. The parliament of the country has approved the program of reequipment in cost nearby 20 billion pounds sterling (30 billion euro) in the middle of March, 2007. Earlier it was informed, that the quantity of submarines of such class can be reduced up to three.
Reequipment of submarines - is only a part from a general plan of updating of nuclear potential of the Great Britain. In December 2006 prime-minister Tony Blair has declared, that modernization will be spent with the purpose of reduction of a nuclear arsenal of the country to conformity with requirements of XXI century.
According to prime-minister’s words, updating and improvement of the British nuclear potential is constraining means in case of unforeseen threat, in particular terrorist, and also proceeding from so-called “states-derelicts”. Tony Blair has emphasized that it would be quite unreasonable for the Great Britain to refuse from own independent forces of nuclear restraint.
