Alternative automobile biofuel
BP and DuPont Companies have declared the first successful results of testing of new alternative automobile fuel - biobutanol.
Today Platts Agency has informed that according to BP and DuPont’s joint communiqué, biobutanol possesses the properties close to properties of lead-free gasoline that allows using it as the additive fuel to automobile fuel.
BP and DuPont have reported about the results of biobutanol’s tests to the automotive industry-engineers’ Society members at their annual conference in Detroit.
BP and DuPont Companies are carrying out their own research in creation of alternative automobile fuel, which could make commercial competition to ethanol. Since summer, 2006, ethanol is used as the unique resolved additive to automobile gasoline in the USA, and has also been used in the number of other countries as the basic kind of ecologically pure biological fuel.
However, the results of biobutanol’s tests under BP’s and DuPont’s supervision, testify that their development surpasses ethanol on many parameters. So, biobutanol possesses the high power density, less flying, than ethanol, it is poorly toxic and can be transported on usual oil pipelines. Unlike biobutanol the power density of ethanol is less and it also corresponds approximately to two thirds of gasoline’s power density. Thus ethanol more volatile and its transportation are possible only in special tanks.
In 2007 BP and DuPont is going to start the first trial deliveries of biobutanol in the internal market of the Great Britain. Approximately till 2010-2011, the companies are to promote the product in US market.
Concerning ethanol, now the USA is the largest manufacturer of this fuel in the world. In the end of March, Georges Bush has thanked the American motor-car manufacturers for the increase in manufacture of the cars using alternative fuel (ethanol and a biodiesel engine).
